We are proud Nagueños and we should know that our culture and place of origin. We believe that knowing your roots will lead to better understanding of self. Our team was concerned on where the name of our beloved city came from. With this question in mind, the team conducted research on the history of Naga City, specifically on the derivation of its name, and whether Nagueños know about this.

Focusing on the origin of the name “Naga,” the group carried out 43 video interviews and a survey among 213 randomly selected Naga City residents, from different walks of life. The question “Where did the name Naga come from?” was put forward to find out how well they know about its derivation. Pre-survey phase include preparing materials such as questionnaires and planning the areas for the survey form-distribution. The activity was documented by recording videos and taking photos.

Sources of other information were books such as “Naga: The Birth and Rebirth of a City” (Gerona, 2006), public records, and the internet. Oral histories about the city were collected as well from eyewitnesses of the past. Out of the interviews, the researchers captured first-hand knowledge and even personal viewpoints. In addition, the group also setup an interview with the local historian, Mr. Jose Fernando Obias, for credibility and additional details about the topic.

The data gathered from the survey and interviews were tabulated and analyzed using frequency count and percentage technique.

The challenge for the team was intertwining all information and putting it into words. Although the researchers are new to this job, they were able to overcome this with the supervision of their coach Mr. Jonathan Briones. And fortunately the team has outstanding writers. Together, the team was able to overcome this challenge with ease and they were able to give the different part of this research work an edge by following the writing etiquettes like sentence construction, paragraph development, strategic presentation and using the proper language to express the intended message.

The technical specialist of the team went through online tutorials on software programs to be used for this research topic. They engaged in the designing and planning on the webpage design. Pictures, graphics, and animations were enhanced using Adobe Photoshop, while the video interviews were edited in Ulead Video Studio 11. For the presentation of the data gathered they used the Microsoft Excel to create graphs and charts.

Events during the Peñafrancia Festival such as Traslacion, Voyadores Festival, and Fluvial Procession were also covered through handheld cameras.
